ABOUT

Cho’s “Relationship” series feature dogs and their owners but whose heads are cropped.

 Originally inspired by Robert Graham’s two headless bronze statues at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum,

 Cho employs this stratagem to further complicate what goes on in his painting.

Of the three relationships, the first two, namely the one between the dogs and their owners,

and the other between the dogs and us viewers, seem straightforward enough;

but the third, the one between the headless owners and us viewers,

is troublesome because they are unknown to us. Here lies the crux of the matter:

we have to imagine who they are, we are not in on what the dogs know.

Cho has taken away what we take for granted when we meet people in our everyday life: their faces.
