ABOUT

There is something old about Choi’s paintings. 

It comes not so much from his subject matters as the tones and colors that make up the canvas surface itself; 

we are talking about the very materiality or the look of such materiality 

that makes us feel the weight of time when we look at his paintings. 

It is the look of patina, the kind you see and feel when you stand 

before the ancient monuments or the faded frescoes of Buddhist or Renaissance masters. 

Not only that, but even his figures are never clearly articulated; 

it is as if they too have borne the burden of time and met the decay of their outline accordingly. 

Hence a pervasive sense of melancholy about them: 

they cannot escape the background they are so dyed in and have faded with. Literally, that is.
