ABOUT

Jang is unique in that despite her formal art education

she shows no discernible evidence of institutional learning to that effect. Indeed,

looking at her wide variety of work done so far, we might just as well call her “self-taught.”

This is not so much “naïve” art as they call it in some circle as the sense that

she is unclassifiable according to existing academic categories.

At the risk of oversimplifying things we might also gingerly suggest the word “intuitive”

to describe her manner of working.

Another expression that comes to mind is “a force of nature,”

which goes some way toward characterizing a good deal o

f her performances and site-specific installation work.

Her latest work is painting. This took many of us who know her by surprise, because

1) this was nearly the first time she had taken up painting since her graduation ten years ago, and because

2) she had made a real breakthrough in this medium.

Here, again, we might note her “self-taught” approach;

her paintings are marvelously alive because they are free of any clichéd image or pattern whatsoever;

and the final results are completely her own and original.

She will continue exploring this medium for a while, we are told, to our delight.
