----- Rena Son (Son Jin Hyung) -----
ABOUT
Son prefers “synthetic” colors. By that she means the ones found in things made of plastic laminate.
She says she grew up surrounded by such things and has come to consider
their visual aesthetics significant part of her personal and generational identity.
Son folds resin into her pigments to stop them from “discoloring” in the process of painting. She uses a knife,
a chisel, her own fingers, or any combination of these to create a three-dimensional effect on the canvas.
She wants her viewers to be mindful, therefore, of the false,
flattening look they are likely to get when they see photographed
images of her paintings. She lives and works in Seongnam-Si, Korea.
